Frequently Asked Questions
Reagent Products
-
What are research-use-only (RUO) reagents?
An RUO reagent is a chemical IVD product that is in the laboratory research phase of development and is being shipped or delivered for in-vitro investigation. Not in any clinical application.
You can learn more about RUO definitions via FDA guidance: https://www.fda.gov/media/87374/download
-
What are reagent solutions?
Reagent solutions are biochemical products and services for laboratory research:
- Nucleic acid sequences
- Enzymes
- Proteins / antibodies
- Chemical solutions (or mixes)
- Building block formulations
- Analyte componints / kits
-
What applications are reagents used in?
Reagents support an array of laboratory experiments throughout life sciences. Their value can range from basic consumables in routine chemical and cellular analysis to critical analyte components in target analysis and assay development.
More detail in application list
-
What are current quality control standards for reagents?
RUO product are essentially unregulated in the U.S but must be properly labelled. Beyond the labelling statement, FDA regulations do not mandate any other restrictions or limitations on RUO products. Thus, quality control testing is based on common good practices:
- Providing product formulation (buffer, additives, solution)
- Molecular weight verification via gel-electrophoresis (or SDS-PAGE)
